This is tedious and messages can get lost in translation. Worse still, many NZ companies do not even bother translating documents in dealing with foreign language speaking customers. The expectation is that the buyer will deal with us in English. Much has been said of New Zealand's increasing trade engagement with China, especially since the signing of the FTA last year. But the reality is much of our trade with China involves NZ importing Chinese-made goods. ...

Your Browser ? Cyber Security's 1st Line of Defence

Your Browser – Cyber Security's 1st Line of Defence
By Donna J. Jodhan

Did you know that your browser is the number 1 line of defence for cyber security?  Did you know that your browser acts as a two way street?  Yes, you use it every day to browse the Internet, download games and music, and so on and at the same time, this poor overworked piece of software acts as a line of defence against those cyber pirates.  Don't ever take our browser for granted.  Make sure that you understand all of the features of your browser.

For example, make sure that your browser notifies you whenever you try to download something from the Internet; with an appropriate warning message.  Make sure also that it warns you about pending downloads that you did not request.  Example, if you see a message about downloading some sort of spy ware or virus protection software that you did not ask for.  All good browsers should be warning you about any type of download whether or not you requested it and they also should be telling you when you are about to view a secure or unsecured site and about to send information to a secure or unsecured site.

It is so important for anyone to know about the importance of their computer browser and I have a great article for you to read.  Please see below.
Your Browser – Cyber Security's 1st Line of Defence

It is where cyber security should police the two-way cyber traffic. ... Today's many browsers are mostly graphical browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, AOL, Opera, Safari for the Macintosh, and Lynx for the visually-impaired users.) China International Business

                  China International Business
By Donna J. Jodhan

How much do we really know about what or how China is doing when it comes to developing products and services for our aging population?  Should we be falsely believing that China does not really care?  Or should we be starting to pay more attention to this sleeping giant?

China is probably the most populous in the world and at the same time, it is the country that most Westerners still do not know very much about.  China is still very much an under rated entity but it is time for us to start changing our attitude to this dragon.  China is poised to become one of the most powerful economic giants in the world and is even threatening to take away the number 1 spot from the United States.  In addition, this rising giant is making rapid steps in the health care arena.

I am going to leave you with a very insightful article to read.  It's all about what China is doing these days and I urge you to read it.  Please see below.

Look For Franchise Business Opportunities At The Right Places ...

Look For Franchise Business Opportunities At The Right Places ...
By Donna J. Jodhan

So many of us are unable to determine where to look for good franchising opportunities let alone when to look for them.  Believe it or not, snagging a successful franchising business depends a lot on where you find it and when.  There are always good times for one to enter into the franchising business and there are bad times as well.

For example:  You would want to watch the economy closely to see which types of franchises are doing well and which are not.  In addition, be very careful when thinking of purchasing a franchise that may seem too good to be true.  In the past, several persons have been burned by accepting franchises that were bogus.  In Canada for example, and not too long ago, there was the famous or infamous Pizza franchise scam.  My suggestions would be as follows:
1. Watch the economy very carefully to see which franchises are doing well and which are not.
2.  Make sure that when accepting a franchise from anyone, you investigate the owner of head person of the franchising business.  Go to all lengths to do your investigation.  Do not leave any stone unturned.

I am going to leave you with a very interesting article to follow up on.  Please see below.

The Most Powerful Generation in America

The Most Powerful Generation in America
By Donna J. Jodhan

The boomer generation has been described in so many ways and this particular generation may very well go down in history as one of the most talked about.  Be that as it may, here are some very important facts about this generation for you to keep in mind.

1. They are known as the sandwich generation because they are caught in the middle; having to take care of both aging parents as well as their own kids all at the same time.
2. They will probably go down in history as having had to weather one of the worst recessions.
3. They are presently caught in a situation whereby they have to decide between either having to work longer to protect their nest eggs or retire early and look for more satisfying careers.
4. they comprise one of the largest consumer markets.
5. they are poised to become the most influential generation.

I am going to leave you with a very interesting article to read.  One that talks more about the ways and habits of aging baby boomers.  Please see below.

How many of you are in tune with how computer worms work?  Do you know how they work and how they come to exist?  Do you know how they are born and where they live?  These are very important questions for you to ponder and you should be able to answer them reasonably and comfortably.

If you know how to defend yourself against computer worms then you are good to go but if you do not know how to defend yourself and how to get help to rid your system of them, then you are in big trouble.  Computer worms are harmful; they can practically destroy your operating system, and when you least expect it, they can slip unseen into your computer system and within seconds they can make your life a living hell.  In short, a computer worm is a tiny piece of software that can cause havoc in your system.

Inheritance expectations unchanged despite recession, BMO ...
By Donna J. Jodhan

We have just witnessed one of the worst recessions of our time but despite all of this many aging baby boomers are expressing the view that they do not expect inheritance expectations to change.  Why?  Because they believe that older generations would have inheritances to pass down despite the recession.

How realistic are these expectations?  Could it not be said that older generations have suffered just as much as the rest of us during this recession?  Could we not look at it like this:  Their financial needs still remain the same and they have had to dip into their savings and crack their nest eggs in order to stay afloat?  Should we not be trying to manage our inheritance expectations a bit better?

I am going to leave you with a very informative reference to check out and maybe it will help to clarify this picture a bit more.  Please read on.

Blind sailor designs wireless navigation system

Hello there!  I'm Jeff N Marquis at the business desk and today, I'd like to give a boost to your weekend by sharing a very inspiring article with you.  One that talks about how a blind sailor has managed to design a wireless navigation system.
I wish you a great weekend and a happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends.

Blind sailor designs wireless navigation system

Jim Doyle
SF  Chronicle, August 29, 2009

Shielded from the sun by his baseball cap and dark shades, Ed Gallagher
seems like any other middle-aged sailor headed for a carefree getaway on San
Francisco Bay.

But he's blind, and these days, Gallagher is busy planning for an October
race, one that would include some of his own technological advances.

He may not be the first blind man to race sailboats, but he's quite possibly

the most creative.

The artist and former building contractor is developing and testing wireless

technologies so that he and others who have lost their sight can enjoy
sailing and other high-risk activities such as shooting firearms, archery
and skiing.

He's also hoping that his technical advances will help blind children and
adults live productive, satisfying lives.

Gallagher's passion is sailing.

Aided by a miniature video camera embedded in the bridge of his sunglasses,
he's preparing to single-hand a 12-foot Liberty dinghy in a national regatta
in October.

The camera captures what Gallagher would see if he were not blind, and the
images are relayed simultaneously to shore via the Skype computer-based
communications network. A sailing buddy, watching the video in real time,
offers guidance to the skipper.

Gallagher, who lives in San Francisco's Twin Peaks neighborhood, calls his
custom-designed system the Genoa Connection. Genoa is the name of his guide
dog.

Refining the technology

His project began two years ago with a video camera mounted to a bicycle
helmet. He has since refined and used this technology to fire a handgun on a
shooting range, shoot arrows at targets, and ski downhill slopes and
cross-country terrain in Aspen, Colo.
His camera is now the size of a dime.

"There's a gazillion applications for this stuff," said Gallagher, 58, who
lost his sight to cytomegalovirus retinitis about 10 years ago, forcing him
to retire. He's totally blind in his right eye, and sees only light and
shadow with his left eye.

History of innovation

This isn't Gallagher's first innovative foray. He serves on the board of
directors of the Zero Gravity Arts Consortium, a nonprofit organization
whose intention is to help artists explore space travel as a venue for
artistic activity. He dressed as a pirate during
a "parabolic flight" in which he experienced weightlessness in the fuselage
of a Boeing 747. And he has created numerous artworks including performance
art.

Gallagher's Web site, Genoaconnections.org, traces the history of his
current project. His sponsors include Logitech, a computer hardware
developer in Switzerland.

"It's a work in progress," he said, sorting out some computer glitches.

Gallagher, who serves as commodore of the Bay Area Association of Disabled
Sailors, sails from Pier 40 near the Giants' baseball stadium. For the time
being, his intention is to stay close to shore until his sailing system is
thoroughly tested.

It all seems simple, but occasionally one of the two laptop computers needed
for his system crashes or a battery wears down, leaving the sailor without
shoreside assistance. During testing and training sessions, he is
accompanied on board by another sailor who sits
behind him as an observer; he is also followed by a chase boat.

Genoa, his dog, yelps and barks when her master leaves the dock without her.

On board, the Army veteran still relies on his senses and experience. He
wets and raises his index finger to test wind direction and velocity.

"The wind's coming up," Gallagher tells his shoreside guide through a
headset microphone as he enters McCovey Cove.

He also uses his ears.

"You listen to the wind and the sails and the rigging," he said. "The heel
of the boat tells you how fast you're going. ... I grew up on sailboats, so
it's second nature to me."

A natural sailor

Gallagher grew up in Michigan, where he sailed on Lake Fenton, the nearby
Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. In his lifetime, he has also sailed in
Europe, Asia, Africa and South America - and raced on San Francisco Bay.

When asked what sparks him to conquer all the technological challenges to
sail without sight, Gallagher said: "I love it. You're one with nature - out
there with the water, the wind and the sun. I'm very healthy, except for my
eye problems. I just never  quit."

What I Learned from Having My Laptop Stolen | Mac Hints & Tips

What I Learned from Having My Laptop Stolen | Mac Hints & Tips
By Donna J. Jodhan

Can we honestly say that if our laptop were to be stolen, we would know what to do and how to prevent the laptop thief from breaking into our laptop?  Can we honestly say that we would know what to do in order to prevent an entry into our personal security?  The majority of us have very sensitive information stored on our laptops and God forbid if they were to be ever stolen.  Many of us have the false notion that ours could never be stolen; until it is and then we are in big trouble.

There are definitely things that we can do to protect ourselves if our laptop is stolen.  For one thing, requiring the user to enter a password in order to login.  This mechanism is good but not totally full proof.  If a hacker really wants to hack into any laptop system and knows more than a thing or two about hacking, they can do it.  However, there are things that we as laptop owners can definitely do to make it more difficult for hackers to hack in.

I am going to leave you with a reference to check out.  One that comes from a person with experience of having had their laptop stolen.  Please see below.

First, in the Security pane of System Preferences, I turned on the checkboxes labelled "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" and "Disable automatic login." Next, I created a new Guest Account in System Preferences. In the guest account, I set up Parental Controls so a user can't really do much beyond log in, use iLife, surf the Web, and so on. More importantly, behind the scenes, I have granted MacTrak permission to run quietly. ...

Rolling on the river is crossing's hottest trend

Rolling on the river is crossing's hottest trend
By Donna J. Jodhan

How would you like to know which product is presently going gang busters in Europe these days for baby boomers, retirees, and seniors?  How would you like to learn how to take advantage of this product both as a consumer and as a seller?  There is a very real market out there; consisting of aging baby boomers, retirees, and seniors and demand is real.

Anyone who is able to provide a product and/or service that can cater to the needs and demands of this very lucrative and dynamic market could potentially become very personally and financially satisfied.  The product listed below is one such example.  It is a product that is growing popularity and seems destined to be around for a very long time to come.  We need to see more innovations like this; they are badly needed.

I am going to leave you with a very interesting reference to check out.  Please read on.

Robotics aces unveil sci-fiwheelchair; Design lightens load of caregivers

Hello there!  I'm Jeff N Marquis at the business desk and it's the first Saturday of October.
Today, I have a really interesting article to share with you.  One that talks about a huge break through for those who are either confined to wheelchairs or those who need to depend heavily on them.
I look forward to your feedback and comments.
Please send them to us at info@sterlingcreations.com.
Have a great weekend.

Robotics aces unveil sci-fiwheelchair; Design lightens load of caregivers

Edmonton Journal , Aug. 28, 2009

Robotics and medical experts in Japan on Wednesday unveiled the prototype of
a new high-tech electric wheelchair that resembles a scooter and promises
greater
mobility.

Users ride astride the four-wheeled Rodem -- rather than sitting in it, as
in a conventional wheelchair -- steer it with a joystick and hold onto
motorbike-style
handles while the knees and chest rest on cushions.

The design allows users to slide more easily on and off the vehicle,
lessening reliance on care-givers to lift them, the inventors said.

"I believe this is a whole new idea for a wheelchair," said Makoto
Hashizume, head of the Veda International Robot Research and Development
Centre and a
medical professor of Kyushu University.

"With this vehicle, users can move around more freely and more actively
without much help from other people."

It is the first invention unveiled by the Veda centre, which opened in May
in southwestern Munakata city and is a joint project of Japanese robot-maker
Tmsuk Co. and researchers from 10 universities and institutes.

The robotics and medical specialists, including from Germany and Italy, aim
to invent robots for use in health and nursing, an area where high-tech
Japan, with its fast-greying population, is seen as a world leader.

The inventors said they had no immediate plans to commercialize the new
vehicle, which would first have to meet government safety standards, but
said they were open to offers from private companies in Japan and overseas.

Tmsuk president Yoichi Takamoto said the Rodem may also be used by people
who are not disabled to simply ride and enjoy.

Takamoto said the Rodem was too simple to be called a robot, but added that
it may evolve into one.

"We can add more robot-like functions in future," he said. "For example, we
could add a new function so it comes to your bedside when you call."

Why Small Businesses Need Websites

Why Small Businesses Need Websites
By Donna J. Jodhan

We are living in a world where the Internet is the that big bad ocean and we are swimming in it along with sharks and fishes of all sizes.  These days, small businesses need to pull out all of the stops in order to be noticed and recognized both by other small businesses as well as by those who are bigger than they.  They need to make themselves household names and they need to keep themselves in the limelight.  In short, they need to find ways to stay afloat on the Internet.

Most small businesses these days use websites to advertise themselves on the Internet and it can easily be said that without a website it is practically impossible to remain in business.  The picture is like this:  The website becomes the lifeline to the rest of the world; a raft that floats and helps to keep a business alive.  So, what does all of this mean?  It means that in order to survive, small businesses need to use websites more affectively and be more creative at doing it.

I am going to leave you with a great reference to check out.  One that has many strategies to share.  Please read on.

Scientists devise cyber security 'neighbourhood watch'

Scientists devise cyber security 'neighbourhood watch'
By Donna J. Jodhan

How concerned are you about cyber piracy?  Do you think that we as a country are doing enough to combat this growing menace?  Do you believe that we would some day soon be able to stamp out cyber piracy completely?  These are all questions that keep coming back to haunt us and I am afraid that if we do not act now, cyber piracy may soon start to get out of hand or maybe, it has already begun to get out of hand.

I for one believe that there are things that we can do in order to stem the tide of cyber piracy and I also know that certain countries are taking affirmative steps to deal with the situation.  The one thing that we can start to do is to build awareness and to start thinking of ways of combating cyber pirates.  Cyber piracy may never go away but we can definitely do things to make it harder for cyber pirates to have their way.  Doing nothing is not an option.  Doing something definitely is.

I am going to leave you with something very interesting to read.  See what Britain is doing to combat cyber piracy.  Please see below.
