Providing Financial Protection for Seniors » The Glass Hammer

Providing Financial Protection for Seniors » The Glass Hammer
By Donna J. Jodhan

The term elder abuse is becoming more and more popular these days and sad to say it is a term that has so many negative connotations to it.  There was a time not too long ago when the term elder abuse used to be applied to the treatment of the elderly in homes for seniors; but no more.  This term has been expanded to include the treatment of the elderly not just in homes for seniors, but also with regard to financial matters.  Elder abuse is growing by leaps and bounds and it is something that we as a society need to pay closer attention to if we want to ensure that our parents are going to be well taken of.  As a matter of fact, we need to address this growing problem now if we ourselves hope and expect to look forward to golden years of pleasantry and security.

Financial protection for seniors should be made a priority and it should be at the top of the priority list for everyone.  For make no mistake about it, do nothing and we may as well say goodbye to financial stability.  Do something now and it can only stand to benefit all.  We need to be thinking about the future of generations to come.  We need to take steps to stamp out elder abuse now for if we do not then tomorrow's generation will have much less to look forward to.

Elder abuse is real; and those most responsible for this are primarily those in the health and financial industries.  It is important for us to know this and identify this in order to start tackling the problem head-on.  I am going to leave you with a very insightful reference to check out.  One that speaks directly to this problem.  Please see below.

Students Develop Cane With E-Tags to Guide Blind
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 3:33 p.m.  ET

DETROIT (AP) -- A cane equipped with the technology that
retailers use to
tag merchandise could help blind people avoid obstacles.

An engineering professor and five students at Central Michigan
University
have created a ''Smart Cane'' to read electronic navigational
tags
installed
between buildings to aid the blind in reaching their destinations
more
easily.

''This project started as a way for me to teach students to see
and
understand the ways that engineering can be used for the greater
good,''
said Kumar Yelamarthi, the professor and project leader.  ''We
wanted to do
something that would help people and make our campus more
accessible.''

During the spring term, Yelamarthi and five senior engineering
students
tested the cane, which is equipped with Radio Frequency
Identification
technology, similar to what retailers put on products to keep
them from
being stolen.

The Smart Cane contains an ultrasonic sensor that is paired with
a
miniature
navigational system inside a messenger-style bag worn across the
shoulder.

For the test, the students installed identification tags between
two
buildings on the campus in Mount Pleasant, Mich..  A speaker
located on the
bag strap gave audio alerts when the system detected an obstacle
and told
the user which direction to move.

Students wearing glasses that simulate visual impairment tested
the cane.

The students also created a vibrating glove to assist those who
are both
visually and hearing-impaired.

Yelamarthi said it's one of the first outdoor applications of
RFID and said
he plans for students in upcoming classes to further refine the
system
while
he seeks grants to speed the research.

The next step probably involves using the system in a wider area.
Down the
line, Yelamarthi wants to work toward integrating the Smart
Cane's data
with
GPS.

Invest in Information Technology that will Save the Elderly

Invest in Information Technology that will Save the Elderly
By Donna J. Jodhan

If you are looking for some business opportunities to invest in; ones that have the potential to cater to real consumers, real demand, and real markets, then I have two very potent suggestions for you.  These are opportunities that will cater to very real demand from real consumers;  I am talking about consumers who are elderly and opportunities that exist in the tele medicine and home security arenas.
To be more precise:  It is all about investing in  Information Technology as it relates to tele medicine and home security.  These two areas are becoming more and more of concerns and demands for seniors and the elderly and anyone seeking real opportunities would be well advised to investigate these further.  Tele medicine is going to become more and more important to not just the elderly but to aging baby boomers as well and to persons like busy moms with kids.  In the case of home security, this type of business opportunity will soon start to extend to serving many other classifications of consumers.

With regard to the market that contains elderly consumers, it can easily be said that this market will continue to grow indefinitely because it only stands to reason that we are all going to grow old at some point in our lives and become elderly and with persons living longer than they used to up until a decade ago, these demands would only naturally grow with time.  Medical services that are readily available and accessible are becoming more and more important to the elderly.  Home security is also becoming more and more of a concern to not just them but many others as well and these two areas can be expanded to include other types of related services.

I am going to leave you with a very interesting reference to review.  One that talks about how you can use information technology to create business opportunities in the tele medicine and home security fields.  Please see below.
Invest in Information Technology that will Save the Elderly
Telemedicine and home security are two industries that have emerged out of the information technology age and both are set for rapid growth. Both rely upon such gizmos as sensors, radio frequency identity tags, mini cameras, ... Security and telemedicine both offer fantastic business opportunities. They will no doubt make fortunes for smart entrepreneurs. And savvy investors could make big money, too, by finding the right companies with solutions to one major problem ...

Computer Terms and Meanings

Computer Terms and Meanings
By Donna J. Jodhan

With more and more aging baby boomers and seniors gravitating towards the Internet, the demand for both hard copy and electronic instructional manuals is growing at freight train pace.  At the present time, many of these types of persons really do not know how or where to look for such types of resources and this is why they often become confused and nervous when it comes to learning how to negotiate and work with the Internet.  What they are fast learning is that the Internet consists of a whirlpool of components; just too many to deal with in a logical manner.  So, enter the need for manuals.

In addition to all of this, aging baby boomers and seniors and many others as well are constantly having to keep up with the powers of the latest and greatest releases of software.  So much is available for knock down prices but at the same time there is also so much available for free.  The thing is this however; many Internet goers are still not sure how or where to look in order to take advantage of these bargains.  The Internet is growing and will continue to do so for a very long time to come and with this will come a growing need to be able to search and learn.

What would be ideal is if something could be done to bridge the gap between the growing demand and how and where to find the resources needed in order to help individuals cope.  There are so many new terms cropping up each day along with new meanings and terminology to understand.  This is not going to change so we might as well settle into a comfortable position.  We also need to find ways to teach others how to deal with and use some of the more important mechanisms on the Internet.  So where do we start?

I am going to leave you with a great starting point.  One that can help launch you into a great adventure using the Internet.  Please see below.

A domestic space odyssey

A domestic space odyssey
By Donna J. Jodhan

The times they are definitely changing and from what we are seeing, retirees are moving in with their adult children as part of a shifting landscape.  In Britain this is happening and across Europe they are following suit.  In North America this trend seems to be a bit more sluggish but many are saying that it will only be a matter of time before it starts to take off.

This trend has been given a quick start by the present economic crisis and families are doing this in order to cope.  What we will probably see is a change in what we call the family.  Whereas before now society used to consider a family as consisting of primarily parents and children, now we are going to see an extension to this family of an inclusion of grandparents.  The Eastern countries have been doing this for years now and now it is the turn of the Western countries.

On a cultural level, Eastern countries may be more ready and prepared to accept this growing trend and European countries may not be too far behind but for the British it may take a bit of a learning curve for all stakeholders to get used to.  In the case of North Americans, only time will tell.  Whatever the outcome, this trend probably has the potential to live for at least the next decade and it would be interesting to see how the marketing and advertising industries deal with this.

I am going to leave you with a fascinating reference to check out.  One that paints the picture for the reader in Britain.  Please see below.

INCLUSION INTERNATIONAL CONDEMNS COMPULSORY STERILIZATION AND HIV TESTING OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN...

Good morning!  I'm Jeff N marquis at the business desk and today I have a very sobering article to share with you.  One that shows us that there are still countries out there that are choosing to deliberately trample upon the rights of the disabled.
If you feel as strongly as I do, then please send your feedback to me at info@sterlingcreations.com.
I wish you a great weekend.

Press release
For immediate release

INCLUSION INTERNATIONAL CONDEMNS COMPULSORY STERILIZATION AND HIV TESTING OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN RWANDA AS A ABHORANT VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

July 6, 2009 (Toronto) – Inclusion International (II), a federation of 200 family-based organizations advocating for the human rights of people with intellectual disabilities worldwide, calls on the international community to oppose a reproductive health bill introduced in the Rwandan Parliament.

The proposed reproductive health bill includes provisions that would impose forced sterilization and mandatory HIV testing on people with intellectual disabilities.
According to the newly introduced bill drafted by the parliamentary committee, physicians would be granted the right to test an "incapacitated" person without their consent and then disclose the testing results to their official guardian.

These provisions would be in direct violation of the Rwandan governments ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Forced sterilization would not only violate the rights of persons with disabilities but is also regarded as a crime against humanity by the International Criminal Court. The mandatory testing of HIV and disclosure of results would infringe on privacy rights and lead to abuse.

People with intellectual disabilities are among the most marginalized and vulnerable groups in our societies, measures such as those proposed by Rwanda despite their international obligations under the Convention, serve to dehumanize and devalue people.

Diane Richler, President of Inclusion International, "People with intellectual disabilities all over the world continue to be victims of human rights abuses.  The CRPD was conceived to protect against these kinds of abuses by governments and society.  We must build awareness of human rights and call on governments to respect and promote those rights."

Human Rights Watch Press release
July 1, 2009

Compulsory HIV testing, sterilization of disabled violate rights

(New York) - The Rwandan Parliament should remove provisions in a draft law
that would mandate compulsory HIV testing and require the sterilization of
all individuals with intellectual disabilities, Human Rights Watch said
today. The organization said that the provisions, in a reproductive health
bill, are deeply flawed and violate the government's obligations to uphold
and protect human rights.

"Compulsory HIV testing and forced sterilization are counterproductive to
the Rwandan government's goal of improved reproductive health," said Joe
Amon, health and human rights director at Human Rights Watch. "Provisions in
the current bill that increase stigma, rely on coercion, and deny
individuals their reproductive rights should be removed."

Human Rights Watch said that the reproductive health bill, drafted by the
parliamentary committee whose duties include promoting social welfare,
contains three particularly troublesome provisions related to HIV/AIDS
testing. First it provides that all individuals who plan to marry must
undergo HIV testing and provide a certificate beforehand. Second, married
individuals are required to be tested for HIV/AIDS upon the request of their
spouses. Third, if a physician finds it "necessary" for a child or an
incapacitated person to be tested for HIV/AIDS, he or she may conduct the
test without seeking consent and may show the result to the parent,
guardian, or care provider.

Ensuring that all HIV testing is confidential, conducted with informed
consent, and accompanied by counseling is widely recognized as integral to
effective HIV prevention and treatment strategies. Mandatory HIV testing and
disclosure have been condemned by the Joint United Nations Programme on
HIV/AIDS, the World Health Organization, and the UN's Office of the High
Commissioner of Human Rights as violations of the right to privacy and
counterproductive to effective HIV/AIDS control.

These organizations have also stated that mandatory testing and compulsory
disclosure can put women at increased risk of abuse and undermine public
trust in the health care system. Research by Human Rights Watch on HIV
testing has documented significant abuses associated with coercive testing
programs.

The proposed bill also obligates the Rwandan Government "to suspend
fertility for mentally handicapped people." Systematic, forced sterilization
has been recognized as a crime against humanity by the Rome Statute of the
International Criminal Court.

In May 2008, Rwanda ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities. The convention upholds the rights of persons with   disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, to equal rights. Human
Rights Watch said that laws on sterilization, including for persons with   disabilities, must respect both a person's right to bodily integrity and
informed consent to medical procedures. Decision-making about sterilization   must take into account each individual's capacity to give informed consent,
and where such capacity is lacking an individualized consideration must be   made of the best interests of the person concerned.

"While Rwanda has made notable progress in fighting stigma and responding to   the AIDS epidemic, and has pledged to advance the rights of persons with
disability, forced sterilization and mandatory HIV testing do not contribute   to those goals," Amon said. "These elements of the bill undermine
reproductive health goals and undo decades of work to ensure respect for   reproductive rights."

Has anyone ever heard of PartnerUp.com? - Small-Business-

Has anyone ever heard of PartnerUp.com? - Small-Business-
By Donna J. Jodhan

It is becoming more and more important for small businesses to find ways to both post business opportunities as well as to find them.  There is no doubt that we are living in very hard times and the more that we can find ways to cooperate with each other the better it is going to be for all of us.  I am specifically referring to the small business community.

We need to find ways to partner up so to speak.  We need to create avenues of opportunity for each other.  For make no bones about it; the future of our economy will definitely lie in the hands of the small business community and this is going to be more so after we have managed to weather our economic crisis.  The time is now and ripe for the small business community to start making its mark.  Things are changing and it is quickly shifting in favor of small businesses.

Gone are the days when big businesses ruled the roost.  The landscape is changing and it all has to do with this present recession which has managed to change the way both individuals and companies are thinking when it comes to finding ways to cooperate in the name of economic survival.  If anything, this recession has taught us that in order to be able to survive in the big bad ocean we need to band together.  In order to beat future economic downturns, we need to do more of cooperating rather than going it alone.

I am going to leave you with an excellent reference to check out below.  One that talks about partnering up.  Please see my reference below.

Comast Cable TV Special | Computer Safety Tips

Comast Cable TV Special | Computer Safety Tips
By Donna J. Jodhan

In today's world, we could never be too safe and cautious when it comes to taking care of our passwoord safety.  Almost everything that we do online requires us to have a password in order to access our information.  If we need to access our online bills or banking, we need a password in order to do so.  If we shop online or need to visit an online library, we need a password in order to login.  If we need to access the home page of our blogs, we certainly need a password in order to do so.

In so many cases, we often find ourselves having difficulty creating and storing passwords and this is exactly what hackers and identity thieves are depending on; our inability to keep safe and secure our passwords.  You see, the creation and storing of passwords are becoming more and more of a primary concern to us and a primary target for hackers and identity thieves.  There are really two parts to password security; the creation of a password that cannot be easily hacked, and the storing of the password itself.

With the need to create and store multiple passwords these days, we need to find ways to become more creative when creating passwords as well as storing them in safe spots; where only you and you alone will know where to find them.  I'd like to give you a few healthy tips when it comes to password security.  Do not use the same password for all your needs.  Do not use birth dates and names of family members or pets.  Use passwords that are a combination of numbers and letters.  Store passwords in places that can easily be remembered.  Have backup copies of files that contain your passwords.  Designate a backup person if you need to.

Password security should not be taken lightly and I would urge you to pay more attention to this.  I am going to leave you with a great reference to check out.  One that will give you some really great tips to ponder and put into play.  Please see below.

Mark Miller: After the Crash, a New Realism Emerges About Retirement

Mark Miller: After the Crash, a New Realism Emerges About Retirement
By Donna J. Jodhan

Up until the crash of a few months ago, there were so many of us who had made such grandiose plans for retirement.  From the person in the 20s to those in their 40s and 50s and from those who were o so close to retirement to those millions of baby boomers.  We were all looking forward to a retirement filled with our dreams of travel, owning our ideal homes, taking the courses that we never had time to take while we were working, golfing and fishing, and so much more.

Yes, we were  really dreaming then and no one could have blamed us for doing so.  We figured that we would have earned it all by the time that we were ready to retire but who could have forecasted what started to happen late last year?  Who could have foretold that in the matter of just a few months all of our dreams would come crashing down and by the time this is all over retirement would be adopting a new meaning?

There was a time that the word retirement meant the fulfillment of dreams unrealized but these days this cherished word now means continuing to toil away just to keep one's head above water.  I am afraid that the reality is going to be very different for the majority of us by the time this is all over.  A new and more somber reality is going to take the place of golden dreams; one that will probably be comprised of working longer and harder, more funds needed to fulfill those dreams of ideal homes and once in a lifetime trips, plus more careful financial planning to satisfy the needs of both parents and kids.  Yes, a more harsh reality is awaiting us at the end of this tunnel.

CVS/pharmacy Enhancing Accessibility for the Visually Impaired To
Its Web
Site and Store Point-of-Sales Devices

Initiative Announced In Collaboration with State and National
Organizations
for the Blind

WOONSOCKET, R.I., July 30, 2009:  CVS/pharmacy, the nation's
largest retail
pharmacy, announced today that it is implementing functional
improvements to
benefit its customers with visual impairments and other
disabilities.  The
company has installed tactile keypads in all CVS stores and it
will enhance
its website in 2009.

Today's announcement is the result of a collaboration between
CVS/pharmacy,
the American Foundation for the Blind, American Council of the
Blind and
California Council of the Blind.  CVS/pharmacy's actions were
applauded by
these groups.

"We are pleased to collaborate with organizations committed to
advocacy for
the blind and introduce service enhancements in our stores and
online that
will increase access for our visually impaired customers," said
Helena
Foulkes, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of
CVS
Caremark.

Point-of-Sale Improvements

CVS/pharmacy's point-of-sale improvements are designed to assist
customers
who cannot read information on a flat-screen point-of-sale device
and
therefore cannot privately enter their PIN or other confidential
information.  All CVS stores have been equipped, at a minimum,
with a
tactile device at both the front check-out counter and the
pharmacy counter
to ensure that customers unable to use a flat-screen keypad do
not have to
provide their PIN to a store employee.  The company is also
training its
store employees to provide appropriate interaction with visually
impaired
customers regarding the use of the new tactile devices.

"Without tactile keys, blind and visually impaired people have no
choice but
to share their PINs with strangers," explained Melanie Brunson,
executive
director of the American Council of the Blind.  "Today's
announcement, and
the collaboration that led to it, demonstrates CVS/pharmacy's
ongoing
commitment to its blind and visually impaired customers."

Web Site Access

The initiative includes CVS/pharmacy's commitment to ensure that
its online
pharmacy,  <http://www.cvs.com/> www.cvs.com, is accessible to
persons with
a wide range of disabilities, including blind computer users who
use a
screen reader or magnification technology on their computers and
those who
rely on a keyboard instead of a mouse.  CVS.com will implement
these
enhancements by the end of 2009.

"An accessible web site is crucial if people with vision loss are
to obtain
goods, services and information on an equal footing," said Paul
Schroeder,
vice president, programs and policy group of the American
Foundation for the
Blind.  "We appreciate CVS/pharmacy's commitment to ensure that
CVS.com is
usable by the broadest range of online consumers, including those
who have
disabilities."

Are you sick and tired of competing with others in Asia especially with those from India for lucrative home based business opportunities?  Are you tired of them outmuscling you in the area of pricing?  Are you finding that you are just not able to compete when it comes to offering rates that would enable you to make a decent living?  Just don't have the answers?

Let us not fool ourselves about this.  We all know that it is much easier for small businesses based in Asia to outrun us when it comes to cheaper rates and why is this?  Because cost of labor is cheaper and this is the biggest challenge facing small businesses in North America today but we should not lose hope or give up without a fight.  The secret to success here lies in sound and logical Internet marketing and before you ask where can you find this I have a starting point for you.

First, I am going to let you in on a very hidden secret and it is this.  Despite their ability to provide services at much cheaper rates than us, there is one main ingredient that most Asian based businesses lack and it is this:  Their gross inability to communicate affectively in the English language.  Their reading and writing skills are much below par and the same could be said for their verbal skills.  This is what you need to keep in mind as you prepare to face off against them.

I am going to leave you with a very useful reference to check out.  One that you will find has many keys to help you design and develop timely and lucrative home based businesses.  One that will provide you with tons of free Internet marketing ideas.  Please see below.

Money Girl :: Save Time, Save the Planet, Bank Online

Money Girl :: Save Time, Save the Planet, Bank Online
By Donna J. Jodhan

Online banking may not be for everyone; especially so if you did not grow up in the age of technology.  Online banking may be just another routine task for those under 40s persons and for those who are bound and determined to keep up with technology but for many others it is often viewed as a two headed monster or even worse as a very necessary evil.

However we choose to view this topic, online banking is here to stay and many experts are openly saying that the two main benefits to online banking are as follows:  It saves time and it helps to save the planet.  In the case of the former, one can now do their banking from the comfort of their home or office and at any time of the day.  In the case of the latter, it helps to save our planet because it cuts down on the use of paper.

I do not think that these two benefits can be easily dispersed.  They are sound, logical, and very true.  This being said, online banking is still very much of a novelty to many and a viewed hazard to others.  These arguments are no doubt going to continue for quite some time but in the meantime, it would not hurt for us to hear and closely examine both sides before making up our minds.  It may be easier for us to just accept the inevitable but on the other healthy opinions and suggestions can only help to improve the situation.

I am going to leave you with a very interesting reference to check out.  One that presents a great argument for the acceptance of online banking.  Plese see my reference below.

30 Steps to Financial Health

30 Steps to Financial Health
By Donna J. Jodhan

We are living in times when our baby boomers in particular need to be paying extra special attention to their financial planning but this is nothing new that I am saying.  What we are seeing these days is a picture of baby boomers who are desperately seeking safe and secure financial planning and financial planners who are practically stalking baby boomers in order to drum up business.  Yes!  This is what is happening and baby boomers need to be extra careful in their choice of who they ask to help them take care of their precious savings and investments.

So, how can baby boomers deal with this?  What can they do in a situation like this?  How will they be able to determine the true and honest investment advisers from those who are just out for their business?  Should baby boomers be trending more towards using financial investment advisers from legitimate financial institutions instead of independent financial investment advisers?  Or, should it be the other way around?  Are financial institutions ready and prepared to truly help baby boomers invest soundly?

We need to see more financial investment advisers who are going to be able to understand the needs of baby boomers.  We need to see an improvement in attitude on the part of our financial industry.  An attitude where stalking becomes a thing of the past, and healthy advice becomes more of the norm.  We need to see more financial investment advisers who are better educated and skilled and who can step up to the plate and become investment advisers who are more willing and prepared to improve the financial health of their clients instead of looking like financial rushers and hustlers.

I am going to leave you with a reference to check out.  One that has a lot of sound and logical advice to offer its readers.  Please see below.

Good morning!  I'm Jeff N Marquis at the business desk and today I would like to share a really interesting article with you.  How would you like to learn more about what the state of Georgia is doing when it comes to accommodating the needs of disabled tourists?  Well, I have something very interesting for you to read.
I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
If you would like to contact me then by all means, send me an email at info@sterlingcreations.com.

Guest Commentary: Georgia's Planning and Tourism Initiatives for the
Disabled

Trina Bolton
Atlanta - July 2, 2009

Could a blind visitor ever fully enjoy a visit to Georgia's Aquarium without
being able to see the marine life? Yes. Due to the collaborative efforts of
experts at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Georgia Department of
Economic Development, and several local organizations committed to the
disability community, it may someday be possible for a blind guest to have
an enriching experience at this Atlanta attraction.

The Accessible Aquarium Project, under the leadership of Georgia Tech, aims
to engage visitors with blindness or vision loss in the venue's many
exhibits. In-depth research is being conducted on motion, tracking, music,
and narrations with a goal to convey the dynamic nature of a tourism
destination such as the Georgia Aquarium.

These alternative means of representing a tour draw on other senses and seek
to enhance the holistic elements of an aquarium, zoo, museum, or outdoor
tourism zone. This project is part of an overarching initiative to advance
Atlanta and Georgia's accessibility for the disabled population,
particularly in the areas of travel and tourism.

On June 15, the Georgia Alliance for Accessible Technologies Initiative
(GAAT) of the United Nation's Global Initiative for Inclusive Information
and Communication Technologies (G3ict) held a meeting at the offices of the
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG).

This seminar of presentations and dialogue focused on the progress of GAAT's
overall work and allowed members of the group to share updates about their
recent endeavors related to establishing Georgia as an accessible
destination for the disabled.

Participants from a range of organizations attended, including
representatives from IBM Research, Delta Air Lines Inc., Hartsfield-Jackson
Atlanta International Airport, the Governor's Council on Developmental
Disabilities, Georgia Tech, the Atlanta VA Rehab Center of Emory, Aeolian
Solutions, among others.

These leaders reconvened to follow-up on its last workshop in late April,
hosted by the Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI), and to devise a new
set of immediate goals, all with the ultimate objective to promote Georgia's
competitiveness in accessible travel and tourism. This accomplishment will
serve as a strong driving force in the economy and brand Georgia as a
frontrunner in human rights, hence the persistent cooperation of public and
private sector
entities.

Presentations on "good practices" in Georgia commenced with IHG and a
description of the company's increased concentration on web accessibility
sites and other technological undertakings for reaching out to the disabled
constituency, both domestic and international.

According to Karen Bennett, manager of user experience at IHG, everything
from grass roots pressure to upper management and financial support is
crucial in the hotel industry's adoption of accessibility standards. In
order to spearhead accessibility innovations for the Holiday Inn and Holiday
Inn Express sites, IHG has worked on thoroughly educating planners and
developers about the needs of the disabled. She cited the ongoing challenges
of these site changes and re-emphasized the importance of consistently
educating the company's staff.

In his discussion on Delta's Disability Program, David Martin from the
airlines department for disability services and customer advocacy also
highlighted the value of educating employees on the subject matter and
training them to ensure "good practices."

He continued by depicting Delta's commitment to making "Delta the carrier of
choice for customers with disabilities." The strategies used to do this
include
providing operational excellence, anticipating complaints, offering helpful
responses to feedback, and seeking advice from experts.

He defined experts as disabled individuals themselves, since they hold the
most insight regarding problems and improvements.

Delta works with the Shepherd Center, the Center for the Visually Impaired
(CVI), and other non-profit groups on its "experiential outreach program" in
order to connect with these experts.

Delta encourages those with blindness, deafness, or physical disabilities,
such as spinal cord injury, to confront the difficulties that they face with
air travel by going through a guided tour of Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson
Atlanta International Airport.

This is an opportunity for each individual to undergo the steps of travel
(from check-in, to security, to gate arrival, to enplaning, deplaning, and
making connections), so that he or she can express concerns and overcome
fears. This is a mutually beneficial program as Delta can learn from any
negative experiences, create improvements based on complaints, and make
preventative innovations. Delta's relationships with the Shepherd Center and
CVI exemplify the unique
fusions that can only exist in Atlanta.

The sponsorship team of GAAT, which is composed of representatives from IBM
Research, Aeolian Solutions, and G3ict, concluded the session by
highlighting the positive measures that have occurred since the group's last
meeting.

The Google site for GAAT and its Twitter feeds were completed and serve as a
central source of information for everything related to the initiative (
http://sites.google.com/site/gaallianceaccessibletech/).

This online site serves as a helpful tool for GAAT members to cooperate and
communicate on issues related to the initiative. To develop this site, GAAT
plans to explore various business models employed by organizations running
similar efforts such as: EasyAccessChicago.org (Chicago/Illinois) and The
Accessible Road/La Route Accessible (Montréal/Québec).

Bill Curtis-Davidson, GAAT co-chair and representative of IBM Research,
noted that "GAAT Core Team Members plan to reach out to experts and learn
from other jurisdictions' efforts, so as to explore the best model for
promoting inclusive travel and tourism in Georgia and Atlanta."

Leveraging such global connections will help GAAT develop a unique plan that
will support Atlanta and Georgia-based organizations' goals.

The organizations participating in GAAT are hopeful that their research and
development efforts will extend the identity of Atlanta and Georgia as
highly accessible travel and tourism destinations.

Their efforts should one day help Georgia residents and visitors with
disabilities navigate transportation facilities easily, experience smooth
air travel, find accessible hotels and inns, experience attractions and
exhibits, and have a thoroughly enjoyable experience in Georgia.

By Donna J. Jodhan

Today, I would like to raise the alarm for anyone who is thinking of going into the shipping business as a small business venture.  This particular scam is growing by leaps and bounds and the best way for you to safeguard yourself is to be aware of its existence.  It seems as if scammers and schemers are using the Internet to entice and tempt wood-be small business owners into becoming involved in shipping services.  They are offering huge returns for anyone who is interested in shipping goods to other countries but you know what?  The countries that you end up shipping to have very weak legal systems and the scammers and schemers are paying you with fake or stolen credit cards.

If you are not aware of these two important facts; shipping to countries with weak legal systems and payment with fake or stolen credit cards, it would be very easy for you to fall prey to these unscrupulous people.  True it is that if/when you are approached you are presented with a once in a lifetime offer, but please be very careful.  First, check out the credentials of your potential partner.  Next, check out the destination country of where you are being asked to ship goods to.  Finally, check out the payment method and insist on being paid through a reputable online merchant.

It never hurts to be overly cautious and I am going to leave you with a reference to check out below.

Would-be business owners, consider these five tips

Would-be business owners, consider these five tips
By Donna J. Jodhan

If you did not already know; the largest market today is the baby boomer market.  A market that is known for its real demand, real consumers, and lucrative opportunities.  Many companies are still ignoring the demands of this market and I am afraid that by the time they wake up and smell the coffee it may be just a bit too late for them.  As a special needs business consultant, I continue to preach this sermon to companies on a daily basis and I keep reminding them that this particular market has some very important challenges to deal with.  Challenges such as having to work longer in order to care for elderly parents.

Too many companies are busy focusing their attention on the needs and demands of a younger market and I am by no means saying that this is wrong.  However, the baby boomer market is a ready-made one; with consumers who are probably the most financially influencial.  In addition, their influence reaches way beyond the buck.  You see, this generation is not being called the "Sandwich generation" for nothing.  They are very influencial in the caring for their elderly parents and their kids all at the same time and who better to target than these consumers? They are heavily involved in helping their elderly parents to obtain the products and services that they need; financial, health care, plus more.  They are also heavily involved in caring for their kids as well; financial planning, basic needs and wants, education, plus more.  So why not make these consumers your priority?

As mentioned above, they belong to the largest market; they are the largest generation in the world.  They are doing double duty and are expected to be on duty for a very long time.  So, why not build your business around these consumers?
I am going to close by giving you a reference to check out.  One that supports my point of view.
Would-be business owners, consider these five tips

Social-Networking Sites 'Locking Users Out'

Good morning!  I'm Jeff N Marquis at the business desk.
Another great summer's weekend shaping up and today, I am here to raise a very important concern.  One that focuses on how several social networking websites are locking out a specific group of users.  I would really welcome your feedback on this particular article and invite you to write to me at info@sterlingcreations.com.
I'm Jeff N Marquis wishing you a great day and weekend.

Social-Networking Sites 'Locking Users Out'

But are not breaking disability discrimination laws

by Andrea-Marie Vassou
Computeractive, May 14, 2009

Social-networking websites and those based on user-generated content are
"effectively locking out" disabled users, charities have said.

In the UK there are estimated to be 1.6 million registered blind people, 1.5
million with cognitive difficulties and six million that have dyslexia.

Accessibility charity Abilitynet and the British Council of Organisations of
Disabled People
(BCODP), said by not providing accessibility options, it is often too
challenging for people with disabilities to use sites such as Facebook
andTwitter. And they warned as these sites become more popular the situation
could get "more challenging".

There are often no alternatives to features such as Captcha,
which involves the user having to read a distorted image of a word and enter
that text to be able to continue. And many sites with user-generated content
do not offer different fonts, colours or text sizes.

Robin Christopherson, head of accessibility services at Abilitynet, said
that sites were "effectively locking out users" at registration. This is
because they used features such as Captcha, which involves the user having
to read a distorted image of a word and enter that text into a box to be
able to register. He said there was no alternative
text provided for these images to assist the partially sighted.

"If anything it's more of a challenge to make one of the new sites
accessible than it was before - so things may actually get worse," he said.

There is often little incentive to get web developers to make these sites
accessible. The World Wide Web (W3C) consortium, an international group
developing web standards, does issue accessibility guidelines for web
developers. However, Richard Wood, chairman of the BCODP,
said: "Website developers can't be bothered to follow the criteria set out
to ensure disabled users have access to these sites."

And in the UK there is also no legal requirement for these sites to follow
these guidelines.

Companies selling products and services must comply with the Disability
Discrimination Act (DDA).
The Equality and Human Rights Commission, the Government body charged with
ending the  discrimination and harassment of people because of disability,
age or religion, said: "As these sites are not offering goods or services,
the DDA does not apply."
