Consumers point out companies with dismal customer service records
Top of the morning to you out there! I'm Donna J Jodhan at the business desk and this week, due to an unusually heavy demand from our emailers, I am going to change things a bit. Ever since we started to talk about companies who are guilty of lousy customer service, we have been inundated with requests for us to talk a bit more about them. So, for this week, I am going to pull out some of the emails and highlight their complaints against certain companies. I would hasten to add that we are not doing this to pick on any particular company, we are doing this because you want us to.
The first company that we would like to shine the light on is Doubleday and we are going to publish a comment that was sent to us by one of our readers. This reader is furious with Doubleday because of their lack of courtesy and it is a complaint that continues to prevail. Many emailers continue to send us complaints about Doubleday's bullying tactics, their rudeness, and their somewhat underhanded methods of trapping customers into buying their books and memberships. I'll let you be the judge of the following comment.
I assumed they got his name from some mailing list broker, which is bad enough (sending new memberships without being asked), but when I called, the *very rude* customer service person told me that he must have clicked on a popup ad for a contest and given them the info.
The second company in question is Telehop Canada. A long distance phone company that advertises very cheap long distance rates but according to Greg Lovach, Telehop should not be allowed to do business in the long distance market. According to Greg: "This company provides crappy service. Their advertising is false and they have the nerve to have themselves listed on the Toronto stock exchange market. They advertise one thing but what they don't tell you is that they charge a dollar up front as soon as you dial. Their phone service is lousy, and their customer service reps can't even speak English properly. Other long distance companies are no better and it's time to put an end to this kind of thing."
Another company in question as we have been saying for the last few weeks is R. E. B. Magnetics. A company that dares to sell games for blind and visually impaired persons but has the boldness to say that it is too costly to provide the instructions in Braille. Here are some comments from Luke Santos: "R. E. B. Magnetics should never be allowed to sell any sort of product for blind and visually impaired persons given their attitude. When they decided to sell the Sudoko game to blind people they should have the sense to realize that they would have to put the instructions in Braille or on cassette. Then they say that it is too costly! This should not be tolerated and I say that we should do our best to run this company out of town if they don't smarten up."
Then there is A & P Canada. For the past few months we have received several phone calls and emails from persons who are very unhappy with this supermarket chain's change in attitude towards special needs customers including seniors. There was a time when this company used to provide top notch customer service to shoppers requiring help at their stores. However, this seems to have changed within the last year and now the company is saying "We are not in the business to help people. We are in the business to sell groceries." Shame on you A & P Canada! Maybe you don't realize it but by 2010 over 60% of Canadians will be seniors and if they can't receive adequate customer service at your stores they will go elsewhere. You're not the only fishes in the sea and you should look into this matter before it comes back to haunt you.

Top of the morning to you out there! I'm Donna J Jodhan at the business desk and it's time for me to open up our e-bag and answer as many questions as I can for this week. Before doing so however, I would like to thank the many of you for your feedback and comments and I will do my best to answer as many questions this week.
Question from Jane Pearson: I am thinking about retiring early but with a pending recession I am not sure what I should be doing. Any suggestions? Answer: Jane, I recently read a report that many of those who have been thinking of retiring early are now starting to rethink their plans and it all has to do with the recent downturn in our economy. Economic downturns often hit retirees the hardest because it is during these times that they really experience financial difficulties. It goes like this. If you retire then your income bearing years are over and now you have to depend on the savings that you have worked so hard to accumulate and when the crunch comes you now have to work to stretch your savings to ensure that you can keep your head above water. So, with all of this in mind, yes. If you can manage to hang on and ride out the downturn, stay in your job until it is over.
Question from Darius Sky: Do you think that those between the ages of 16 to 30 are savvy enough to start saving for their latter years? Answer: Darius, I don't think that it is ever too early to start saving and when it comes to this particular age group, it would definitely be in their best interest to start saving from now for their latter years as you put it. I don't think that many of them really realize the ramifications that could befall them if they don't start doing this from now. Many persons in this age group are still not very savvy when it comes to the topic of saving but I believe that it won't be long before you see more of them starting to take note.
Question from Scott Adenower: Can you give me some benefits of using the services of a virtual office? Answer: Scott, I think that virtual office services can greatly help those who are involved in small businesses. The majority of small business owners are constantly challenged with such things as: The day to day operations of running their businesses, marketing activities, plus more. It is extremely challenging for most small businesses to be able to juggle all of these tasks successfully at the same time and if they hope to stay in business then they need to find ways to allocate enough time to each of these tasks. In addition to this, they need to ensure that they have the right type of skilled personnel to accomplish what they need to accomplish. A virtual office is a very efficient way to help run a small business. A virtual office can help to accomplish such important functions as: Daily scheduling of appointments, administrative and secretarial duties, answering services, and other types of office keeping duties. Virtual office services are growing in importance and I would urge any small business to take a long hard look at how they can help to improve efficiency in their operations.
Question from Nigel Margaren: So, how do we go about convincing companies to bring back their call centers from India? Answer: Nigel, by constantly bombarding them with our complaints and comments re our unhappiness about the services that we are presently receiving. Maybe start boycotting their services and go to another competitor. However with a smile I would hasten to state that other competitors may also be guilty of using call center personnel from India. So, just keep up your protests.
Question from Greta Armondo: I constantly worry about stress in the workplace. I know that it is on the rise. Do you think that stress is worse in the workplace than in the home? Answer: Greta, according to the opinions of many experts along with several reports that I have recently read, the answer is no. Each location if you want to call it that comes with its own set of stress factors. There was a time when many argued that stress in the workplace was greater than in the home but this opinion has recently shifted markedly and it all has to do with the recognition that stress does indeed exist in the home for many reasons. Reasons such as: The challenges of keeping a family happy, healthy, and positive. Ensuring that food is kept on the table. Ensuring that family goals and objectives are met on a constant basis. Of course one can add many other factors to this very short list.

Question from Dennis Frank: I would like to know if the rumor is true that some American corporations are finally heeding the call to bring back their call centers from India? Answer: Dennis, I am not sure if it is just a rumor or if there is indeed a trend quietly taking place. I am still getting calls from call centers in India working on behalf of some American long distance phone companies and the other day I asked one of the call takers where he was calling from. When he told me New York, I knew that he was not telling me the truth because the call display on my phone was not a New York area code and I could tell that it was a call originating outside of North America. Like many others, I truly hope that sooner rather than much later, companies will find it necessary to bring back their call center operations from India and relocate them in North America.
Question from Anica Berson: Dear Donna, I am curious to know what would you say are some of the top reasons for women wanting to set up their own business? Answer: Anica, Off the top of my head and based on what other women who have left their jobs to set up their own businesses have told me: They want to create something that they can call their very own. They seek more flexibility in work schedule. They want to be independent of others. They want to be their own bosses. They want a change in lifestyle. They truly believe that they can find better financial and personal satisfaction through the creation of their own business. They believe this because they feel that their progress in the workplace is being hampered by the so-called glass ceiling for women.
Question from Erin Farmer: I recently read about the credit crunch right here in the United States and I continue to read about the scary word "recession." Do you think that we are close to it? Answer: Erin, from what I read and from what is being given to us each day in the news, I believe that we may indeed be at the beginning of a recession if not very close to one. A recession is usually something that most of us don't want to see happen and is measured in terms of three consecutive quarters of negative growth. I think that we are all hoping that if one is upon us it would just be a mild one and like you I am watching with great interest.
Question from George Le Gary: Donna, do you share the opinion that there is a food shortage taking place in the world today? Answer: George, based on the increasing prices in the supermarket, my grocery bills increasing, and from what we are hearing from the experts, yes. I am not an expert on this matter so I am only basing my opinion on what others are saying. The experts are saying that our food reserves are falling rapidly and rising prices in the supermarkets are being caused by shortages of flour and wheat. I think that I read somewhere that certain wheat producing countries recently had bad crops of wheat and coupled with more farmers turning to the production of other types of crops, we are going to have to do something to address this situation.
Question from Peter Lukos: Can diabetes really lead to blindness? Answer: Peter, yes. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness today and there are certain factors that can lead to diabetes. Factors such as obesity and certain heart conditions. Diabetes is also hereditary. There are two types of diabetes. Type one and type two. I believe that type one diabetes is where the person has to use insulin in order to deal with their diabetic condition and cannot be outgrown. Type two is where the person has to use pills in order to deal with their condition. I am not an expert on this so I may stand corrected. However, I do have several clients who are diabetic and they often discuss their conditions with me.

Now for our e-bag. Question from Christin Sopple: What is your thought about the new change in time? That is, turning the clocks forward earlier in the year and back later in the year? Answer: Christin, I am not really sure about this one. I believe that the experts are saying that this new time change is meant to save us more energy in the long run but only time will tell. What I do know is that those electronic devices with in-built timers need to be manually adjusted each time the clocks are changed. However, any electronic device manufactured as of 2007 should be able to handle the new change. Believe it or not, many sectors have been affected by this new time change. Security companies and financial institutions are just two of the affected sectors.
Question from Cayle Scott: I saw your blog last week and am wondering this: How many companies out there are really providing instructions and manuals adequately to purchasers? Answer: Cayle, it is a known problem. Not only are they not providing instructions adequately to those consumers who are blind, visually impaired, or print disabled, they are also not paying enough attention to providing them in multi languages. Most companies do not believe that they should do this. They place more emphasis on the product itself but what good is it if the instructions are either not readable in the case of those who are unable to read print, or if it is not written in a language that can be understood by the buyer, or more importantly if they are not written in language that is easy to understand? Much food for thought.
Question from Jessica Bernaise: Do you think that more people may want to put off retiring early because of the pending economic down turn here in the US? Answer: Jessica, yes. If the economy is doing well then many of those approaching retirement may be more encouraged to retire early but if the opposite is taking place then they may be more discouraged to retire early.
Question from Alex Turner: Not sure if you are following the proceedings in Britain re those terrorists on trial for the foiled attempts in 2006. If you are, then do you think this would have any additional effects on the airline industry? Answer: Alex, some very startling facts are being revealed and it appears that these men had very big plans for the skies over the Atlantic ocean and it included Canada. I am sure that I along with you and many others are closely following these happenings and I am sure that the airline industry is listening very carefully and if they feel the need to enact more stringent rules, then they will do it. In addition, I am very sure that many governments are also listening very intently. Who knows what else will be revealed at these hearings.

Hello everyone!I'm Donna J Jodhan, president of Sterling Creations and it is my pleasure to welcome you to this edition of our newsletter.I'd like to thank those of you who have taken the time to provide us with your feedback and I encourage you to pass our newsletter along to others who may be seeking the types of services that we offer.

Top of the morning to you! I'm Donna J Jodhan at the business desk and today I am going to take a different route. I am doing this because of a recent influx of emails that we have been receiving with regard to the topic of false advertising and those companies who sell products with inadequate manuals and instructions. It has come to our attention that more and more of the smaller companies are getting on the band wagon when it comes to selling products for persons with disabilities, products for seniors, and products for anyone who has a special need. These companies are bold enough to offer these products to these groups of consumers but truth be told they are not selling what they advertise. Within the last month we have received several complaints about some companies that are selling games for blind and visually impaired persons but their games do not come with Braille instructions. They only come with print instructions and when the company is asked for Braille instructions or instructions in alternative format such as audio cassette or electronic format, their comeback is that it is too costly to put it into alternate formats. So, I ask the very sober question: What should a blind person do if they purchase a game that a company says has been adapted for them and when they receive it there are no Braille instructions? Here is what I did on behalf of those several emailerswho continue to write to us with this problem. A few days ago I phoned a certain company in Washington because I was following up on a recent purchase that I made of a Sudoko game. The game did not come with any Braille instructions and when I tried to obtain a Braille copy of the print instructions I received a one page instruction in Braille with Braille on two sides. Definitely not the equivalent of the print instructions which consisted of 10 pages. When I asked the company if it would be possible for me to receive the Braille equivalent of the print instructions, they told me that it was too costly to put it into Braille. When I asked them how it would feel if I were to send them instructions in Braille with no print instructions, the call taker hesitated then admitted that she fully understood my problem but that she did not have an answer. I believe that most of these companies have the best of intensions when it comes to making games available to blind and visually impaired persons but they do not take the time to consider that blind persons are unable to read print instructions and the only way for them to be able to read it is if a sighted person reads it to them. What has happened here is that I now have a brand new Sudoko game that I can't use because I only have one page of Braille to work with and it does not even come close to the equivalent of the print instructions. What concerns me even more is that when I spoke to this particular company, the call taker first tried to defend the company by saying that the Braille instructions were the same as the print instructions but when I pointed out to her that the Braille instructions only consisted of one single page and that the print instructions consisted of 10 pages, she quickly retreated. Her naive comeback was that the Braille page was double sided and my response was that it takes much more than one Braille page double sided to be the equivalent of 10 print pages. Her other response that it would be too costly to put the instructions in Braille really concerns me. As I write this I have two very serious questions: The first is this! Did this company think things through before it decided to offer their Sudoko game to blind and visually impaired persons? Did they not know that blind and visually impaired persons need to read their instructions in Braille and not print? The second is this! When the call taker at the company told me that she did not have an answer, was she somehow telling me that she did not care? So what? It costs too much and that's too bad? My humble advise to any company wishing to sell products to persons who are either blind or suffer from low vision, or are print disabled, is as follows: Please take the time to become familiar with alternate formats. Please take the time to understand that blind and visually impaired persons are unable to read print. Please try to understand that when you fail to put manuals or instructions in a format that your consumer can read, you only end up humiliating them and embarrassing yourselves. It is absolutely false and unfair to advertise and sell products for persons who are unable to read print instructions and manuals due to either being blind or being print disabled if you either do not want to do it or you find it too costly. To let you know which company I am referring to, please find their info below. This company is presently advertising products to persons who are blind or have low vision.
