Our non-profit organisation organises travel programs for blind and visually impaired people since 2004. For 2008 we have three attractive programs we would like to invite also international blind or visually impaired people to take part. Join us and explore Iceland on easy hikes and guided tours in June, learn about wolves and moose combined with hiking trips and cultural activities in Upper Lusatia, Germany in july or enjoy the land of thousand lakes (finland) in your summer holidays with activities like hiking and paddling in august.
Within all our activities we orientate on the special needs of our costumers. Included in our service and the prices is the organisation of an assistance for each two blind/ visually impaired participants. If an assistance is not needed, or a full assistance is desired, we will costumized the price. At the end of this email a short overview over the programs is given. Attached as word-documents you will find the detailed program.

Top of the morning to you! I'm Donna J Jodhan at the business desk and I hope that everyone had a nice long weekend. I have pulled a few questions out of our e-bag so let us see what questions we have this week.
From Heather Sandler: Do you really think that there exists a glass ceiling for women? Answer: Heather, yes. There are some who would say no but I do believe that the statistics speak for themselves. There are still precious few women CEOs in the boardrooms of the majority of large North American corporations. There are very few women executives in the boardrooms of the top Fortune 500 companies. Women are still earning less than men in general, and in a recent report published in Canada, it was revealed that there is a widening gap when it comes to the difference between what women are paid as against their male counterparts. This is very troubling especially for working women in Canada and I do not think that it is much better here in the United States.
Question from Brent Holt: On the whole, I know that the unemployment rate for persons with disabilities is horrendous. Is there any hope of improvement for this picture in the near future? Answer: Brent, as a blind woman who owns my own business, I see and hear so many complaints on a daily basis. I do believe that things can improve but the problem is many fold. On the one hand there has been some very exciting technology break throughs but we need much more in order to change the picture. Society as a whole has to change its attitude towards persons with disabilities. They need to look at a person with a disability in a different light. Look at the person for what they are. Their skills, experience, and motivation. They need to get past the disability and look at the positives. Employers need to adopt a new approach. There are many persons out there who are more than willing to give a person with a disability a chance, but unfortunately they are still greatly outnumbered by those persons who are still not ready and willing.
Question from Shaughn Pearson: What hints can you give to me. I am thinking of becoming a financial planner but need to know a bit more about clients who are seniors or retirees? Answer: Shaughn, According to the experts, the clients that will be most in need of financial planning services for the foreseeable future would include: Aging baby boomers, retirees, and seniors. These are the persons who at the present time are seeking to ensure that their investments stay safe. Aging baby boomers have started to think of their golden years and they are seeking professional help with their investments. Answer: Rita, many people are doing this but I believe that success will come from how you do it and what you write about. There are practically hundreds of thousands of persons out there who are promoting their successes and they are telling everyone about what they have done, how much they have made, and they are just dying to give you the magic solution. However in reality and this comes straight from several experts, the majority of these persons are nothing but flat broke and they are just trying to use their blogs to catch others with their words. On the other hand, I do believe that if you truly believe that you have something unique to say or sell, then why not? It's all about niche marketing in niche markets where consumers are seeking niche ideas and niche products.

Answer: Darla, for at least the past seven years and more, this type of business has been doing very well. It is ideally suited to a small business but there is nothing to stop medium sized businesses from getting involved. At the movies, in cafeterias, in malls, at amusement parks, and even in such places as banks, supermarkets, and in corner groceries and stores. I so agree with this article. Just now, I use pennytalk to call my family in Europe. Over and over I get charged a connection fee without ever talking to someone. If I try to contact the customer service line I am either placed on hold forever or, I get someone who cannot even understand my phone number properly. Congress needs to do something about these companies. It is time we all stop using phone companies that route their calls through India. I will start using the internet phone companies either Skype.com or VoipStund.com which also gives you lots of free minutes. Everybody should know about these websites and with VoipStund you can even connect your call from your landline through your computer.
Question from Kevin Street: What are your thoughts about services for seniors? I mean, do you think that companies are doing enough to cater to their needs? Answer: Kevin, I do and I don't and I will explain. So many times when I go shopping I happen to see seniors and persons who are disabled in some way asking for help at the service desk and more often than not, these consumers are made to wait and wait for service. Sometimes you get a smart customer service rep who goes out of their way to help but for the most part I do not see it and what concerns me is that our population is a rapidly aging one but the majority of the companies out there still don't seem to realize this. I would like to see more and more companies pay more attention to servicing the needs of seniors and consumers with special needs and if they fail to do so then some sort of legislation should be passed to penalize them if they fail to comply. The travel industry has been hammered over the past year with lawsuits from various organizations representing persons with disabilities and I hope that this serves to be a wake-up call. In addition, Target has been in the news within the last few months for not making their websites more accessible to persons with special needs. The time has come for all companies to realize that they really do not have any choice in the matter.
Question from Nancy Francona: I work for a large company and I agree with them resourcing their call centers to India. What gives you the right to criticize them? Answer: Nancy, I do believe that it is anyone's right to criticize this and I as a special needs consultant who is blind is in a good position to impart some very important truths to our readers. True it is that many large corporations are telling the rest of the world that they have a legitimate right to outsource their call centers to India in order to reduce their overhead costs and this is true but there is another important side to this coin. By outsourcing their call centers to India, companies have effectively taken away jobs from hundreds of thousands of North Americans who have depended on these jobs to do such things as: Supplement their incomes, make incomes in fields where high degrees of technical skill are not needed, work at jobs that allow them flexibility, work at jobs where barriers are not as difficult because of their respective disabilities. True it is that these companies are helping themselves but in doing so they have dealt a huge blow to our economy and in addition, they are now employing call center reps who are not able to provide adequate service in English because their first language is not English. They have difficulty speaking English, they have difficulty understanding English, and most of the companies who have relocated their call centers to India seem to have forgotten to train their new workers in the areas of phone courtesy, product knowledge, and service savvy. So at the end of the day, who is the winner? Maybe these large corporations but certainly not the average North American consumer.
Question from Aldo Marino: Donna, as an author of several books, can you tell us what sort of pitfalls we should try to avoid if we are thinking of writing a book? Answer: Aldo, Here are my handful of tips for what they are worth: Choose a topic that you are knowledgeable on. Choose a topic that you feel that others would like to read about. Choose which type of consumers you would like to sell your book to. Choose a market that is real, has real demand, and has real consumers. Decide which type of book you would like to produce; i.e an e book or a hard copy book. Do your research when choosing the publisher that you choose. There are hundreds of online publishers out there just waiting to offer you their services but there is one important thing to know about these types of publishers: They do not help you with the marketing of your book. They take your money, slap a book together for you in their format which is often less than satisfactory, and they offer you all kinds of so-call marketing packages which are often nothing but ploys to get you to spend more money. Many experts would tell you that these online publishers are just lazy companies after a quick buck. In essence, they are only print on demand companies and they take most of your revenues leaving you with precious little profit at the end of the day. If you want to print a hard copy, then there is much more work for you to think about.
Question from Greg Frank: What advice can you give to someone who is being bullied in the workplace? Answer: Greg,bullying is becoming more and more of an issue in the workplace and the quickest piece of advice that I can give to anyone is to report it to your manager. That is, if you have not already done so. You may first want to start with talking to the one that is bullying you and see if this helps and if it does not then go to your manager. If this does not help, then go to your HR manager. Bullying is a very serious matter and as I said before, a growing problem not only in the workplace but also in the schoolyard.

While there are already more than 175,000 cell towers in the United States (there is approximately 8,000 cell phone towers in Canada), this number is expected to increase by 48 percent to 260,000 by 2010, according to CTIA (the International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry).

Tips to Limit Your Damage from Information-Carrying Radio Waves There quite simply is no safe biological threshold for exposure to information-carrying radio waves, and there is, quite honestly, little you can do to avoid them 100 percent. But you can reduce your, and your family's, exposure by taking the following Common sense precautions: Limit the amount of time you spend on a cell phone or cordless phone. Use a wired headset to limit your exposure to the cell phone -- ideally, an air tube headset that conducts sound but prevents any radiation from traveling up the Wire to your brain. Also make sure the wire is SHIELDED, which prevents the wire from acting as an antenna that could attract more information-carrying radio waves directly to your brain. Wireless BlueTooth headsets should be avoided.
Limit your exposure to WiFi routers. Find out where they are located in your Work environment and stay away from them.
If you have any land-based (non-cellular) portable phones, do NOT use anything other than the 900 MHz phones as the Gigahertz phones stay on continuously, blasting you with information-carrying radio waves 24/7.
Use the speakerphone instead of putting the phone to your ear; this is probably one of the single most important steps you can take other than not using your cell phone.
Limit calls inside buildings. Use the phone in open spaces as often as possible. Limit use by children and preadolescents, or don't let them use cell phones at all.

Question from Ryan Gross: Can you give me some quick tips on how to avoid identity theft? Answer: Sure Ryan. Here are some quick ones. Do not carry around unnecessary documents with you that have your name written on them. Sign the back of your credit card. Do not ever give out the three digits of your credit card to unauthorized persons. These three digits are located at the back of your credit card and are separate from the other digits on your credit card. Do not carry around your social security card with you unless absolutely necessary. When you are next getting rid of old bills, be sure to shred them before you throw them out. Do not throw out envelopes with your name and address on them without first either shredding the envelope or ensuring that your name and address have been fully removed from the envelope. Always shred anything and everything with your name and address on it before throwing it out.

If you do a search on Google for these pieces of software you'll find their respective websites.
Question from Hayden Christoff: I am about to retire and am looking for something to do with my time. A home based business would be great for me. What suggestions do you have? Answer: Hayden, the best advise that I can offer to you is: There are definite opportunities out there for anyone who is seeking to establish a home business but there are some hard rules that need to be kept in mind and here is my incomplete list: Think of something that interests you. Next, decide if you have the skills and experience to do what interests you. If you do not have the skills and experience, do you have a way to obtain them. That is, can you afford to obtain what you need in order to do what you are thinking of doing. Next, be sure to do some important analysis on whether or not what you are thinking of doing is something that persons are demanding. That is, is there a real demand in a real market that contains real consumers. This should be enough to start you off. I would caution that whatever you do, be sure to spend adequate time doing your research. Good luck!

Message from the president
Hello! I'm Donna J Jodhan, and on behalf of the staff at Sterling Creations I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all of our readers the very best for 2008.
The year 2007 was a very successful one for us and we could not have done it without the support and feedback from our customers and readers. Sterling Creations is a made in Canada company servicing clients both in Canada and beyond and we are committed to providing services that will assist our customers to bridge the communications divide through our writing, research, transcription, and translation services. We look forward to continuing our sterling services to you.
I'd like to thank the staff at Sterling Creations for their sterling commitment and I invite you now to read our highlights section.
Highlights
The year 2007 was a very busy and successful one for us. We managed to form business relationships with some new partners, and we were also delighted to have worked with some very interesting and exciting clients both here in Canada and abroad. Here are just a few highlights.
We continued to work with various clients and associates in the accessibility arena and 2007 saw us mounting a charter challenge to the Canadian government. In this challenge we file court documents against the Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS), Statistics Canada (StatsCan), and the Public Service Commission (PSC) and our objective was to press for systemic changes with regard to the way in which these three government departments administer their websites.
To be more precise, we launched this charter challenge against the TBS because of their failure to adhere to the duty to accommodate, against StatsCan for having failed to make their 2006 census accessible to all blind and visually impaired Canadians, and against the PSC for having failed to make their www.jobs.gc.ca website fully accessible to special needs Canadians. This afore mentioned website is the gateway to all job opportunities within the Canadian government. At the close of 2007 the government was still attempting to have our charter challenge stayed.
Our charter challenge was joined by Jutta Treviranis, manager of the Adaptive Technology Resource Center (ATRC) of the University of Toronto, and John Rae, representing the Alliance for the Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC). Jutta is very well known in the accessibility arena both for her expertise and for her tireless work with the W3C organization and John is a very well known member of the AEBC. Our charter challenge is being handled by Bakerlaw.
In November of 2007, our president Donna J Jodhan participated in a five-day training session for Human Rights monitors. Donna along with three other persons from Toronto and four others from Quebec were chosen to be part of a project sponsored by Disabled Rights Promotion International. This project's objectives were to train persons with disabilities to become monitors who would then carry out a total of 100 interviews of other persons with disabilities across Ontario and Quebec. The interviews would be digitally recorded and then downloaded to a secure server where they would be sent to researchers who would use them to write reports that would be then circulated to the Canadian government, the media, and organizations working for persons with disabilities.
This project has already been repeated in seven other countries and it is hope that it would be repeated in two additional centers in Canada. The project's coordinators have said that this project is meant to interview those persons with disabilities who feel that their Human Rights have been violated and in addition it is meant to see whether or not the Canadian government has lived up to its promises of respecting the Human Rights of the disabled as has been set out in the recent United Nations agreement.
We also did some volunteer work with Professor John Kennedy, Chairman of the department of Life Sciences at the University of Toronto in July of 2007. We met with some of professor Kennedy's students to discuss how blind and visually impaired persons visualize various objects, scenes, and drawings.
In 2007 our writing team worked with several clients in Britain and Australia. Among them was an Australian Children's author of Greek mythology and a fiction author in Scotland. Our writing team provided proof reading and editing services to the Children's author and ghost writing services to the fiction author. They will continue to work with these two clients in 2008 and the research team will be providing their marketing research services to these two clients.
The writing team also continued to provide blog writing to several clients both in Canada and abroad and in addition, it provided proof reading and editing services to the Balance organization for their Fall 2007 Balance Beagle magazine. In 2008 the writing team will be continuing its work in blog writing, copy writing, and has several new clients requiring proofreading, editing, and copywriting services.
Our research team was formed in 2007 in response to demand for research services and it has already found itself involved in several interesting and exciting projects. In 2007 the research team worked with clients requiring research for Human Rights cases as well as for others seeking financial information for background on legal cases.
The translation and transcription teams also did well working with clients in French, Spanish, and Cantonese. Most of their clients were based in Europe and Asia and they were kept quite busy providing language coaching, translation, transcription, and ESL services.
At the end of 2007 Sterling Creations introduced a new team; its business team and as of January 2008 this team will be making monthly contributions to the free monthly online magazine.

Ever wonder what is on your magnetic key card? Answer: a. Customer's name B. Customer's partial home address c. Hotel room number d. Check-in date and out dates e. Customer's credit card number and expiration date!
When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any employee to access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner. An employee can take a hand full of cards home and using a scanning device, access the information onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense.
Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee reissues the card to the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest's information is electronically "overwritten" on the card and the previous guest's information is erased in the overwriting process.
But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it usually is kept in a drawer at the front desk with YOUR INFORMATION ON IT!
The bottom line is: Keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them. NEVER leave them behind in the room or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the front desk when you check out of a room. They will not charge you for the card (its illegal) and you'll be sure you are not leaving a lot of valuable personal information on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning device card reader.
For the same reason, if you arrive at the airport and discover you still have the card key in your pocket, do not toss it in an airport trash basket. Take it home and destroy it by cutting it up, especially through the electronic information strip!
If you have a small magnet, pass it across the magnetic strip several times. Then try it in the door, it will not work. It erases everything on the card.

Top of the morning everyone! I'm Donna J Jodhan at the business desk and it's time for me to open up our e-bag and pull out some of your questions. We have been inundated with many questions in the past week and I encourage you to keep them coming. I will try to answer as many as I can.
Question from Brian Allen: What are some of the hidden things that one should look for when choosing their next long distance carrier? Answer: Brian, based on a lot of feedback and comments that we have received in the past from our readers, and based on my own personal experience, here are just a few tips. 1 Make sure that when they give you a flat minute rate, that you fully understand that it's just that and no more. There is one company and I am not sure if they exist outside of Toronto Canada, that has been accused of false advertising. They have run commercials in the past that says for example, two cents per minute to a certain country but what they did not say or conveniently failed to say is that upon initiation of the call, you are charged one dollar and that the two cents per minute only kicks in after the first minute. So, if you make a call and leave a message for example, you are charged one dollar and not two cents for that minute. 2 Many small long distance companies lease lines from their larger long distance competitors so that the reception that they offer to their customers is often poor and so the famous saying that says you get what you pay for applies here. For our Canadian customers living in Toronto, the company that I am referring to is Telehop. A company that has been accused of false advertising, offers poor customer service, and their lines are very poor as well. Reception is often very unsatisfactory. Many emailers have complained about Telehop in the past.

Believe it or not, many of our larger corporations started off as small town businesses and the small town business idea is one of the hottest trends these days. What you need to do is some research in your small town to determine how much of each type of business there is. For example, how many health and beauty salons are there, how many corner groceries are there, how many business establishments are there for each type of essential service. Next you need to take inventory of your skills and interests and determine based on your research what type of business you would like to start. Of course, you need to choose the category with the least number of business establishments. This should be enough for you to get going.

I have seen over the years where many small businesses have been able to find riches in niches and have gone on to be quite successful. Those examples that I gave are very real and it is my belief that if you really want to start your own business, you have to start small. Look at the big picture and dissect it in to manageable slices. Take a small corner of a huge market and concentrate on it. Listen to what your potential consumers are asking for. Don't make the mistake of telling your potential consumers what they should be seeking.
