The overtime dilemma
Good day everyone! I'm Jeff Marquis at the business desk and I hope that everyone is enjoying their shopping on this cold and wintry December afternoon.
Today I'd like to touch on a growing concern among both employees and employers. It's being dubbed the overtime dilemma and in a recent survey carried out by NBC news it was revealed that more than 50% of Americans in the work force are saying that they are working too much overtime. According to this survey more than half of those surveyed have responded within the last two years that their overtime hours have increased by more than 20% and that they don't see any relief in sight.
The experts have jumped on this and are putting forth several reasons for this and in addition they are also starting to hand some dire predictions if this trend is not reversed sooner than later. Many are saying that the overtime dilemma could be driven by more and more baby boomers starting to retire and as a result younger workers are being called upon to fill the gap because many employers are either refusing or hesitant to hire replacements. Others are saying that due to a rise in employee absenteeism those who are present at work are being called upon to fill in the hours being lost to employee absenteeism.
There are some who are also saying that overtime is increasing because employers are demanding more of employees and in order to meet increased production levels employees have to work overtime hours in order to keep up.
Some experts are also saying that due to an inexperienced labor force, much time is lost in real production and as a result overtime needs to be a part of the working day in order to meet goals and objectives.
Whatever the reasons, the overtime trend is not a very healthy trend. It is starting to affect both employees and employers and it is up to us all to find ways to deal with it. Long overtime hours can greatly affect one's family, one's home, and one's mental and physical health. Too much overtime can greatly affect family life to the extent that it can even wreck the home and marriage. Too many overtime hours can also bring great stress to the labor force and drive down morale in the workplace.
There's the old saying that too much work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and in the case of the overtime dilemma this saying says it all.
If we care at all about our mental and physical health, if we care about preserving our marriages, our homes, and our overall well beings, then we will all start to address the overtime dilemma before it's too late.
